Charlie Hunnam Explains Why He Didn't Return for 'Pacific Rim 2'

'Papillon' Remake Took Precedence

Exclusive: Hunnam tells Den of Geek his decision was a matter of choosing between two dream projects

Raleigh Becket, the hero of 2013's Pacific Rim, is notably absent from the upcoming sequel, Pacific Rim Uprising. Now, Charlie Hunnam, the actor who played Becket in the original film, has revealed why he didn't return for the second installment.

In an interview with Den of Geek to promote his new true-life adventure drama, The Lost City of Z, Hunnam said that his absence in Pacific Rim Uprising came down to a big decision: do the long-awaited sequel or move forward with a remake of Steven McQueen's 1973 prison escape drama, Papillon.

"I had to make a decision between doing Papillon and Pacific Rim," Hunnam said. "And I was really excited about Papillon. I just felt like it was a more personal story, a more human story. And I felt like I could bring more of myself to that role. So I chose to do that instead of Pacific Rim."

Hunnam's decision to choose Papillon over Pacific Rim 2 is understandable, as Papillon is a classic story with a strong emotional core. The film, which tells the true story of Henri Charrière, a man who was wrongly convicted of murder and sent to a penal colony in French Guiana, is a powerful and moving tale of survival and resilience.

While Hunnam's absence from Pacific Rim 2 is disappointing, it's understandable that he would choose to pursue a project that he felt more passionate about. Papillon is a film that will likely stay with audiences long after they've seen it, and it's a testament to Hunnam's talent that he was able to bring such a complex and challenging character to life.
